happy [insert thing here]!

happy non-denominational end-of-year vacation and possible gift giving time.
i’m gonna be heading back to michigan for “the holidays” for a week. it’s been a long time since i’ve been home, i think over a year now, which is pretty crazy. i’m going to try to do the thing i try to do every time i go home, and usually fail at, which is getting together with a bunch of people i haven’t seen in forever. Already i know 2 people I really wanted to see are going to be out of town, but there are plenty more I’d lke to get in touch with again.
I suppose if you want to see me, let me know. BUt considering only Mike and Robin read this, and Mike’s going to be far far away, and I already talked to Robin, there’s not much point.

in other news… uh… i bought some pants?

I did find T, which is cool.

it’s the chronic-WHAT-cles of narnia!

yahoo keeps buying my stuff.

Things that I use keep getting bought by Yahoo.
del.icio.us, konfabulator, flickr…
I can’t decide if that’s good for all of them, cause now they have money and stuff, or if it’s bad for the people who use it.
To me Yahoo seems like a better version of AOL. I don’t like installing any of their stuff though, because they put all that toolbar crap in your browser and links all over to their fantastic website. And yes Mike, Microsoft does that too, but I don’t install that many of their products either. I much prefer Google’s approach at installing, which is you install the one product you want and that’s all. No “PLEASE USE US MORE” links or “required” toolbars, no plea to set your homepage to msn.com or yahoo.com.

Plus they take a perfectly good name and brand it in a lame way. Already Konfabulator is now known as the quite excitingly renamed to “Yahoo! Widgets” which run on the awesome “Yahoo! Widget Engine” hopefully del.icio.us doesn’t turn into “Yahoo! Saved Links You Can Share” and Flickr doesn’t become “Yahoo! Flash Based Picture Storage and Viewing.”

Time will tell what happens to these products…

Meanwhile I haven’t upgraded to the newest Konfabulator Yahoo! Widget Engine cause I’m skeptical that it’ll remain as useful. Though in truth i don’t like it as much as I initially did when i installed it, most of the widgets seem to use more than an insignificant amount of the CPU, which is annoying. they should work on the performance of the engine so that an analog clock doesn’t take 2% of the CPU to display, that’s pretty lame.

got a round trip ticket to the promise land

tom clancy is go.

As of about 5 minutes ago, 6 new Tom Clancy games are now backwards compatible on the Xbox 360.
Ghost Recon 2, Ghost Recon 2 Summit Strike, Rainbow Six 3 Black Arrow, Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, and Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow are all ready to play.

connect to live and pop in an xbox 1 game to get the update, or go here, download the file and burn it to a CD to manually put the update on your box.

update - or not. there was a problem where halo 2 wouldn’t run in widescreen in 720p or 1080i modes. the update has been pulled, to be replaced later.

calling all freaks

other things i like about 360.

while i’m at it:
Sharing music from my PC over Windows Media Connect is awesome. I’ve got 25 gigs of my own music on my PC in my bedroom, and I can play it all in my living room without any annoying cables running along the walls. I’m doing this right now, or having a PC next to my TV.

Geometry Wars - also awesome. $5 400 Microsoft Points are never better spent.

Custom Soundtracks - in a game where you have already fully experienced the music as it should be and are now interested in hearing your own stuff, of course - is a great feature.

and being able to combine all three of those makes playing geometry wars a lot more enjoyable. The cheesy techno music included with the game isn’t bad, but it loops ever 30 seconds or so, and being able to replace it with whatever I want is an excellent thing.

rip it all to shreds and let it go

Downloadable demos are awesome.

Wednesday, December 7th, 2005

one of the things i really like about the 360 and the live marketplace is that you can download demos for different games. obviously you need the hard drive, since they weigh in at 500+ MB each, but you can download playable demos of a few different games, with more being added. Right now looks like you can get demos for NBA Live 2006, Madden 2006, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Kameo, and probably a couple others that i don’t remember offhand.
And of course, for all Arcade titles, you can download a free trial version to see if you like it before shelling out the cash points for the full version.

remote assistance.

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

so my dad calls me up as i’m driving home, in a crappy mood already, and he tells me that somehow he managed to get a virus or something or other. that was awesome, because now i had to figure out how to fix my dad’s computer over the phone. luckily (thankfully) my dad actually got DSL a month or two ago, and with the magic of remote assistance i was able to fix his issue relatively quickly. faster than over the phone, that’s for sure. it’s not perfect though - i couldn’t get it to work on my desktop for some reason. it says it’s not enabled, who knows why. but on my laptop it worked just fine, and made things much better.

i’m feeling restless and listless.
