after some free chinese food for dinner i headed to the Ballroom in Fremont to catch Optimus Rhyme putting on a show. I happened to run into the guy i saw kid rock with, but then avoided him since he’s kinda weird, plus he was with a friend. then i met and hung out with jerry (a.k.a. tycho from penny arcade) and his friends, for the rest of the night. mike (Gabe) and jerry both like optimus rhyme, and penny arcade is how i heard about the band, so it makes sense he’d be there. that was pretty cool in itself, oh, and there was also a band there.
optimus rhyme is pretty good live. i like their cd, but somehow it’s better to see some geeky guy rapping about transformers, computers, and other things like that. they played basically every song they know (except fuzzy dice which is a good song), including a few i hadn’t heard from their EP, or from a label compilation. They also had a song about the 520 bridge traffic and the eastside in general called Fuck Bellevue. good things. somehow i don’t think they’ll make it too big, there’s not much demand for geeky white guys rapping about geeky things with lots of seattle references (i grew up in 317 / now it’s 206) in the songs, but you never know. hell, just having penny arcade talking about them gets the word out to a few million people a day.
They’re goign to be at the scarlet tree (east of greenlake) august 13th (two weeks from friday), i’ll probably catch them there.
also, friday night… tomorrow that is… Hyaline will be playing at the fenix underground at local band Windowpane’s CD release party. hyaline is a friend’s band from LA, they sound sort of like a mix of tool/APC and alice in chains with a flute (played by my friend) and violin thrown in for good measure. it’s a really cool sound, and anybody who likes things that are good should go. Doors open at 8:00, music starts at 9:30, with the standard $12 pioneer square joint cover that gets you in to about 10 different clubs. go, you’ll like it. plus you’ll be supporting local bands that haven’t made it big.
there’s a halo 2 trailer showing at loews theaters before new movies.
at the end, a url pops up, www.ilovebees.com.
it’s the webpage for a woman’s honey bees, but it appears to have been taken over by a virus.
Also some bottles of honey were sent to members of ARG (Alternate Reality Gaming) with clues that were decrypted to point to ilovebees.com.
All over the webpage, cryptic messages show up randomly, hidden on the page, hiddin in images as text, there are random quotes, etc.
basically, it looks a big puzzle, relating somehow to halo 2.
Also there’s a countdown to August 24th.
There’s a group working on solving it, their webpage is found here: bees.netninja.com/wiki/
It’s pretty cool, lots of clues and puzzles, plus it ties into the marathon/halo world, and should be entertaining to watch as time passes.
Some peopel are speculating that a single player demo will be released at the end of the countdown, August 24th, since you can anagram the text in the countdown message to have a message that indicates it.
Bungie is one of the coolest game studios around, both because of their games and their connection with the fans. They always do extra stuff to keep people interested. Like the trailer, it was made to catch the eye of non-hardcore Halo fans, but it also interests the hardcore fans with the Ilovebees mystery that most people would miss.
And even if bungie isn’t behind this, they’re still a great studio.
I wish it was november 9th.
well, parents left sunday night, so i’ve got my apt. to myself again. it was good having them here, though a bit tiring. had to wake up at 7:45 on sunday to get to breakfast with some friends.
but hey, my apartment is cleaner than it was before they got here, plus my parents helped me rearrange my place a bit. My living room is now about 4 feet wider since I moved the left speaker to the other side of the doorway, and slid the TV to the left as well, and pushed the loveseat back a few feet.
My dining room shrunk a bit, but i never use it, so i’m fine with that.
Also a closet I had that was somewhat in a state of disarray, is now organized and there’s even extra room in there! I think i’ll get some shelves for the closet to store kitchen stuff I don’t use that often.
Is anyone interested in a 10 gallon aquarium or two? I’ve got some extra ones that have been sitting empty for months, and I don’t really have a use for them. $5 each and they’re yours. (and if you live outside the puget sound area, you have to come get them or pay for shipping, so don’t ask.)
Back to regular working now.
Transformers the movie, aquired by Dreamworks and Paramount, being produced by the guys who executive produced the two X-Men movies. Steven Spielberg is executive producing the movie. please be good.
Buy the Knight Industries Two Thousand: just $40,000! It’s one of the original cars used in Knight Rider.
Also, these are neat: Pixelblocks. lego-like building blocks, they’re clear plastic 1×1x1 blocks, but they can attach to blocks on the sides as well as top and bottom. they’re not too expensive, not that I need a few hundred or thousand tiny blocks, but they’re neat and would probably be fun to play with. I wonder if they light up like Lite-Brite…
2 more days of parents.
went to the mariners game last night against boston. it was a pretty good game, and it ended up 8-4 in the 11th thanks to a grand slam.
downtown kirkland walking around on friday.
new library (very cool), pioneer square, pike place market, bite of seattle on saturday.
alki beach, saw very expensive open house condos, dinner with friends on sunday.
mariners game tonight.
are in town.
went to michigan last weekend; two hours of sleep thursday night due to red eye flight led to 12 hours of sleep saturday night.
watched anchorman - really really dumb, but also very funny.
saw van halen - cool, but kinda out of date - average audience age was 35+. Good show though, they played both Dave and Sammy songs, plus the three new songs. it’s really neat to see eddie van halen play guitar, especially the fingertapping style that he has perfected.
set up parents stereo (not home theater) in a less retarded (but still crappy) way. dvd and vcr into A/V switch. video output from switch into splitters for video and audio. connection one from splitter into TV; connection two into wireless video transmitter. audio output from TV into 20 year old receiver. wireless receiver upstairs. it was much worse before.
had ice cream with a friend i hadn’t seen in a long time.
was hot and uncomfortable at night from the heat and my old bed.
that’s about it for the weekend.
played a certain beta tonight (thus the 1:45am bedtime). it’s good, and that’s all i’m saying. (gt: HamstArmy )
classic Rock videos! (with audio converted into midi and the video converted into ascii)
among them: zz top, motley crue, led zeppelin, jimi hendrix. all in terrible green ascii art with midi sound. it sounds like someone tried to put rock music into a nintendo game.
off to MI for some VH.
