i always lose track of the books i read or want to read, so from now on i’m just going to post a title, author and categorize the post as either books. + read. or books. + unread.
I will not in fact be posting every single book in the known universe as books. + unread. just books i want to read, or have heard are good.

just so’s you know why i suddenly start posting things like

“Best American Nonrequired Reading 2006, Edited by Dave Eggers”

With nothing else in the post.

Dark Tower + Marvel Comics

Friday, October 28th, 2005

Hell yeah!
Mike told me about this yesterday and the press release went up today - Stephen King is working with Marvel Comics to create an original comic book based on the Dark Tower.
There’s some sample art up at www.marvel.com/king which looks pretty god damn awesome.

The first issue comes out in April, and the first 6 will be collected into a hardcover book for the Holidays next year.

sci-fi reading on the nets.

Couple things i found today:

Cory Doctorow is publishing the first 10 chapters of his nex book Themepunks on Salon.com. They’ll be going up every monday for the next 10 weeks. I liked the first chapter, we’ll see how the rest is.
I don’t know how to describe Doctorow’s style. it’s not really sci-fi, it’s just fiction, set in the near future with some sci-fi gadgets and ideas in it. Take a regular fiction story and set it in 2050 and that’s basically how it feels.

Also, 365 tomorrows is a project to publish one piece of short speculative fiction a day for a year. it started on august 1st, so there’s a bit of catchup to do, but each one is only a page or two long, and it’s all pretty neat fun stuff.

China Mieville is apparently not doing anything, and his website is down.

Stephen King’s movie version of Desparation is now in post-production, though there’s no release date for it yet.

Orson Scott Card’s Shadow of the Giant (the 94th chapter in the ender series) will be out in March.

it’s over, say thank ya.

dr.o likes king. space. minimini. half-life 2.

Monday, June 21st, 2004

cory docotorow, the guy I went to hear speak last week, likes the Dark Tower series.
see? http://www.boingboing.net/2004/06/18/kings_new_dark_tower.html

space may not be so far away: http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/06/21/suborbital.test/index.html
the first private craft was successfully flown into space, an altitude of more than 100 kilometers (62.5 miles) above ground. SpaceShipOne was funded in part by Paul Allen (Seattle’s spendiest billionaire - he owns the Mariners, the Cinerama, and the EMP and SciFi museum are his babies, and lots more).
John Carmack (big guy at id studios, makers of quake, doom, etc) has his own team of people working on a competitor, and jeff bezos (crazy amazon/segway guy) has a team as well.

you can put a mini in a mini - apple is going to have some way of integrating the ipod with BMW’s and also with Mini Coopers. any 3 series, x3, x5, z4, or mini newer than 2002 can get an ipod adapter installed. It looks like steering wheel controls work too.

(non-gamers are excused now)
also, in an interview with Gabe Newell (head of valve studios) about the 2D Codename: Gordon mod for half-life, Gabe said that he “anticipates delivering it [Half-Life 2] to Vivendi in august.” Now, last year up until September 29th, valve and vivendi were saying that half-life 2 would ship on september 30th, so you might take that with a grain of salt, but it means they’re relatively close to getting done.
Hopefully it’ll be HL2 in September, Halo 2 in November, and probably Doom 3 somewhere in there.

And i’ll be sure to get one of these beasts to play my new games with.

remember those His Dark Materials books i read a while back (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass)?

Robin pointed out a great review of the trilogy at the Boston Globe, which further enforces the fact that you should go read the books now! Especially if you liked Harry Potter, because they’re SO much better. The third book in the series, “The Amber Spyglass” became the first young-adult novel ever to win Britain’s prestigious Whitbread Prize for Book of the Year. Have any of the Harry Potter books won any awards? Honestly, i don’t know, but I doubt it. Well, book 6 won the people’s choice award, but that’s just a popularity thing, not litarary merit.

Read it and weep! I mean… just read it. well, you might weep because it’s SO DAMN GOOD.

need more dt.

oh yeah, i forgot, i finished Dark Tower 6: Song of Susannah this weekend as well. september will not come soon enough.
stephen king is a bastard. but also great.

the time is gone, the song is over
thought i’d something more to say.

susannah. indigenous. cuarón.

Tuesday, June 8th, 2004

I picked up Song of Susannah, the 6th (and penultimate) book in Stephen King’s Dark Tower series. I read the prologue a couple weeks ago, should be good. The final book comes out in September, which is really far too long a time to wait. I’ll be done with this book by the weekend, i’d bet.

I also picked up a cd by Indigenous (self titled/no title). They were one of the bands at the Experience Hendrix Tour concert I went to back in February. The guitarist (Mato) was amazing, and he pulls through on the CD. It’s good rockin’ Blues-Rock, KWS and SRV style music. The band is 4 Nakota Sioux Indians: two brothers (Mato and Pte), their sister (Wanbdi), and their cousin (Horse).

I didn’t think i cared much about watching harry potter, at least not till it was out on DVD, but then i learned the alfonso cuarón directed it. He also directed Y Tu Mama Tambien. Of course, everyone’s watched it already, so i’ll just have to wait.

won’t you move away you fucking tornado
