the cell.

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

This is what the cell processor is good for. Not games, which want general purpose CPUs, and really don’t care how many gigaflops you can do since most of what they do is integer based. It’s the brute strength data crunching tools; program those SPUs and let them have at it.

It’s incredible how much more data the cell chips can handle compared to everything else. If you break it out to average FLOPS per processor type…
PS3 (cell) ~ 24.5 GFLOPS,
PCs ~ 1 GFLOP
PPC Macs - .8 GFLOPS
Intel macs ~ 2.6 GFLOPS
Linux ~ 1.4 GFLOPS
GPUs ~ 59 GFLOPS

The only thing that can compete with the Cell are the GPUs, which are obviously floating point beasts.

Granted, when you put every single Windows PC into one group, you’re clumping the new Intel Core2 Duos with the 10 year old Pentium 2s that are running in a corner, trying so hard to process one piece of data, but still - even the Intel Macs are an order of magnitude off from the Cell chips.

That is all.

gimme money.

I’m doing the beat the bridge race for the juvenile diabetes research foundation on May 23rd.
if you have some extra money, you should donate for me and my team. you didn’t want that money anyway.

concert list.

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

for no good reason, i created a list of concerts i’ve been to. i know i’ve missed a bunch, but i have most of them in there. check it out, if you feel like it.

also i did my taxes and it was nice; owning a home means more refunds.

you push it!

there’s this stupid ad campaign from comcast about how DSL is slow and cable is fast. they have turtles, named slowski or something like that, and they like things slow. they’re animatronic turtles, or puppets or something. they’re not great, mildly funny, sometimes kinda lame. except there’s one commercial where the turtle is putting his laptop in the backyard because the farther you get from the CO, the slower cable gets. it’s pretty dumb, except when the turtle’s wife tells him to push the laptop further and the turtle yells at her “YOU PUSH IT! …push it real good.” and then i laugh. i can’t help it.

also the Winner is pretty funny. it’s the new show from seth mcfarlane, creator of the family guy.

Crackdown is a fun game too.

yay for liking things.

they did something right.

holy crap, the Washington senate did something right:
http://seattle.metblogs.com/archives/2007/03/wash_senate_app.phtml

It’s not approved yet, but we can hope.

It’s not marriage, but at least it’s a step in the right direction.
