redding, CA - anti-free speech

Tuesday, June 27th, 2006

my brother is driving back home from a visit here, and he stopped in redding, CA to watch the Spain vs. France world cup game in a mexican restauarant. The manager at the restaurant was talking to them about the city, saying that he loved it, but that there are not allowed to be any Spanish radio stations in the city. Apparently there is a law there prohibiting it , and the older population has been resistant to change it.
They’re violating freedom of speech for what basically boils down to racism. pretty ridiculous.

what’s the point of having a blog if you can’t talk about anything personal? things suck sometimes.

i’ve been reading a lot lately.
here’s what i’ve read since… a while ago:

jonathan strange & mr. norrell - susanna clark
cell - stephen king
the tree of red stars - Tessa Bridal
american gods - neil gaiman
the reader - bernhard schlink
wicked - gregry maguire
fear and loathing in las vegas - hunter s. thompson
the glass castle - jeannette walls

they’re all pretty good except - cell, i’m getting a little tired of stephen king (it’s about time) but it was still entertaining; fear and loathing, i didn’t really get the point of the book. The rest were all good and i’d recommend them.

i hate allergies or being sick, or both. it’s been weeks since i woke up without a stuffy nose and a sore throat and itchy eyes.

E3 part 1.5

Saturday, June 3rd, 2006

After the 3rd attempt at writing an E3 part 2, and losing it for the third time, i’ve decided to give up on writing a big involved thing, so here’s a quick recap.

The Nintendo Wii is interesting and fun to play with. I think it’ll do well with more casual gamers, but for hardcore gamers it might be tough since it requires a fair amount of movement to play, so it’s not conducive to laying on the couch for hours playing a game.

The PS3 has nice looking graphics, but none of the games shown looked any better than the 360’s launch titles. I tried out Warhawk, the motion sensor enabled game, which was fairly easy to play, but wasn’t actually fun, since there was no AI and really ho-hum graphics.

The Xbox 360 had some cool games that i’m looking forward to like Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Shadowrun, Too Human, and Gears of War. Gears of War looks really good with lots of detail everywhere, and what appears to be an intuitive control scheme.

Other Games of note:
Guitar Hero 2!! - now with co-op play (Guitar + Bass) and 60 new songs.
Assassins Creed - not sure how much gameplay was in the trailer, but it looks great. Plus it’s from the creators of Prince of Persia who know what they’re doing.
BioShock - the spiritual sequel to System Shock 2. It’s going to be great.
Crysis - amazing graphics.
Spore - cool sandbox type game from Wil Wright, Future Has Been.
