what’s the point of having a blog if you can’t talk about anything personal? things suck sometimes.

i’ve been reading a lot lately.
here’s what i’ve read since… a while ago:

jonathan strange & mr. norrell - susanna clark
cell - stephen king
the tree of red stars - Tessa Bridal
american gods - neil gaiman
the reader - bernhard schlink
wicked - gregry maguire
fear and loathing in las vegas - hunter s. thompson
the glass castle - jeannette walls

they’re all pretty good except - cell, i’m getting a little tired of stephen king (it’s about time) but it was still entertaining; fear and loathing, i didn’t really get the point of the book. The rest were all good and i’d recommend them.

i hate allergies or being sick, or both. it’s been weeks since i woke up without a stuffy nose and a sore throat and itchy eyes.

E3 part 1.5

Saturday, June 3rd, 2006

After the 3rd attempt at writing an E3 part 2, and losing it for the third time, i’ve decided to give up on writing a big involved thing, so here’s a quick recap.

The Nintendo Wii is interesting and fun to play with. I think it’ll do well with more casual gamers, but for hardcore gamers it might be tough since it requires a fair amount of movement to play, so it’s not conducive to laying on the couch for hours playing a game.

The PS3 has nice looking graphics, but none of the games shown looked any better than the 360’s launch titles. I tried out Warhawk, the motion sensor enabled game, which was fairly easy to play, but wasn’t actually fun, since there was no AI and really ho-hum graphics.

The Xbox 360 had some cool games that i’m looking forward to like Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Shadowrun, Too Human, and Gears of War. Gears of War looks really good with lots of detail everywhere, and what appears to be an intuitive control scheme.

Other Games of note:
Guitar Hero 2!! - now with co-op play (Guitar + Bass) and 60 new songs.
Assassins Creed - not sure how much gameplay was in the trailer, but it looks great. Plus it’s from the creators of Prince of Persia who know what they’re doing.
BioShock - the spiritual sequel to System Shock 2. It’s going to be great.
Crysis - amazing graphics.
Spore - cool sandbox type game from Wil Wright, Future Has Been.

stephen king i mean.
a few weeks ago i got an email from stephenking.com mentinioning that there was going to be an auction (in support of the First Amendment Project) to get the chance to be a character in stephen king’s next book “Cell.” When i saw that i thought it might be cool, but i knew i wouldn’t have enough money to bid $5000 or however much the winning bid would be. It appears I was a bit low on my estimate.
The auction started on September 8th, at $9.99. Today is the last day of the auction, and with 6 hours, 50 minutes left it’s at $25,000.
check it out.

well i guess we’re gonna have to take control

but so are you.

I had my party last night, it was pretty fun. about 30 people showed up, and there was much drinking and good times.
my good friends rob, kathy, tyler and mike, knowing that I’m half-mexican, thoughfully got me a traditional piñata to break; a traditional care bear piñata. strung up, as tradition says, with belts looped together, and of course broken with the traditional french bread baguette. did i mention my friends are retarded?

For some reason, someone complained at around 12:30 that we were being too loud on the patio, despite the fact that there were maybe 3 people out there, having a conversation. but by that point there were under a dozen of us left, so we managed to squeeze into jeff’s place and hung out there for a while after cleaning up a bit downstairs.
oh yeah, drunk rob is rather amusing.
i had fun, hopefully everyone else did too.

other things…
i watched Resident Evil: Apocalypse on Friday night with Jon and Tom. I liked it, i thought it was pretty good actually. I wasn’t expecting too much other than zombie-ass kicking with Milla jovovich, but they actually had characters that you cared about and some good action scenes. and they didn’t rely too much on Doom 3 style scares, i.e. something jumping out at you. It was more like the way Aliens operated, with a few startling moments, but mostly action/sci-fi/horror. And they pretty blatantly hinted at a third chapter, i’m hoping they do make it, but i haven’t heard any news about it.
There was a trailer for Blade: Trinity, which looks like it’ll be entertaining, hopefully a little better than Blade 2 was anyway.

Next week, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow!

Hyaline on friday night was a really good show. They volume on the flute was turned up a lot louder than it can be heard on the album, which is definitely a good thing.
Point 1 was the second band, they weren’t so good.
Windowpane was third (and it was their CD release part), they were ood, but kind of generic rock band, they don’t really have much to set them apart from other bands.
Finally there was a jam band with Steve Perkins (drummer for jane’s addiction), some guy from Porno for Pyros, and another guy Super Sonic Soul Pimp. The guitarist was alright, didn’t really do justice to the 2 zeppelin covers they did, but not bad.
Saturday i hung out with my old officemate who was up here for a wedding.
Sunday i went to the ms picnic with some friends. ate some free food, played some volleyball, and hung out in the nice weather.
