remote assistance.

Tuesday, December 6th, 2005

so my dad calls me up as i’m driving home, in a crappy mood already, and he tells me that somehow he managed to get a virus or something or other. that was awesome, because now i had to figure out how to fix my dad’s computer over the phone. luckily (thankfully) my dad actually got DSL a month or two ago, and with the magic of remote assistance i was able to fix his issue relatively quickly. faster than over the phone, that’s for sure. it’s not perfect though - i couldn’t get it to work on my desktop for some reason. it says it’s not enabled, who knows why. but on my laptop it worked just fine, and made things much better.

card reader lives.

woo, i found the cd that came with my card reader and got the right drivers and now it’s working again. i have no idea how but some other driver got installed instead and broke it.

i done bought me one.
dell had a coupon for $750 off a laptop over $1999, so i ended paying $1461 for what would have cost $2093 (tax sucks).

now i must wait. and order some RAM.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day

mike, this one’s for you.

Stupid windows xp.
my computer at home doesn’t want to recognize my card reader. that is, it recognizes that it is plugged in (the device shows up in device manager), but the drives associated with it don’t appear in My Computer, so when i plug my flash card into it, i get nothing. Anyone had that problem before? I just want to get my pictures off my card onto my computer so’s i can post them, since some of them are 3 or 4 weeks old.

maybe i should just buy a mac…. hahaha just kidding.

but i might do a good ol’ wipe of the drive and start anew; i’ve messed around with my computer in strange wasy and it’s probably having some issues related to that. but that’s annoying and crappy.

notebook.

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2005

i’m looking to buy a notebook computer (no mike, not a mac.) but i can’t find exactly what i want, since notebooks aren’t quite so customizable.
what i WANT is:
15″ WUXGA widescreen display
Pentium M, probably 1.86ghz (750) or possible 2.0ghz (760)
eventually 1gb of ram, more likely 256 which i will upgrade on my own cheaper
60gb hard drive
Mobility Radeon X600 128mb

the closest i’ve come to this is the dell inspiron 6000 which has everything except the video card. Instead it has the Mobility Radeon X300 128mb, which I think should be good enough, but I haven’t been able to find a single review of it anywhere. all the gaming sites concentrate on the top of the line X800 or X700, which is rather annoying. I don’t really need the crazy top of the line video card, not on a notebook, but i’d like to be able to run a game every once in a while if I feel like it, and I don’t know how the X300 does.

So, does anyone have a laptop with a Mobility Radeon X300 in it who has attempted to play a more or less intensive game on it?

Is this thing going to work with a PC?

media players.

Wednesday, April 28th, 2004

I don’t like current media players (windows media player, itunes, whatever). Winamp is my favorite, because though it has a media library, you can turn it off, and use it as a really simple media player, which is nice. I wish media players could read my mind when it comes to organizing media.

Here’s what I want:
1. All tracks on a CD are related by Album Name and Primary Artist name. Soundtracks, collections, etc. should use Various Artists or something simliar as the Primary Artist.
This makes it possible to have….
2. Two ways of grouping - as individual tracks, and as complete albums.
3. When grouping by complete albums, you can sort by Album Title, or Primary Artist. It makes sense to do this, since a lot of people keep their CDs on the shelf in alphabetical order by artist.
4. Allow sorting by multiple fields - 1st by Artist, then by Album, or release date, or whatever
5. When grouping by artist, have subgroups for the albums on which their tracks appear.
6. When doing 5., have an option or some way of showing only their songs on each album, or the entire album - If i want to hear only the Aerosmith songs off the Armageddon soundtrack, that’s all I want to see in the list. Don’t make me pick the list of all their songs, or the entire Armageddon album, and select individually the tracks I want.
7. For multi-disc albums, group them together. (an option to do this is fine.) It’s stupid having to select Physical Graffiti Disc 1 and Physical Graffiti Disc 2 when they’re one complete album. Put the whole thing together (obviously sorted by disc, don’t put both track 1’s together) but have the option to expand the whole album into each disc individually, in case i do want to play only one disc.

I think i’ll go home, i’ll finish this later…

despite their virus ridden OS, Apple tripled their profits from last year thanks to the ipod, whose sales increased by 909%.
See, they’ve resorted to making up crazy numbers, that’s how big the change was.
Good job with marketing there.
But I’m still not going to get one.

The iPod Mini is having some sound issues. Of course, that hasn’t stopped it from selling out in ridiculous amounts and pushing back the european release to July due to shortage of units.
