car depreciation

Tuesday, March 30th, 2004

So for no reason i just went to the Kelley Blue Book website to look up the value of my car, a 2 year, 6 month, and 16 day old 2002 Camaro.
I bought it for right around $25K. It’s quite sad, but it’s only worth $11,500 trade in value, or $13,800 private party sale value. Props to American manufacturing!
Good thing i’m not planning on selling my car.

eternal sunshine of the spotless mind.

Monday, March 29th, 2004

that’s another movie off my list.
I just got back from watching eternal sunshine, I enjoyed it. Some people have said that Jim Carrey doesn’t quite pull it off, that he tries so hard not to be his usual off the handle self that he doesn’t fit the role, but I thought he did a good job. I also really liked Kate Winslett in her part.

i’m glad we don’t have the ability to do the shit they do in the movie, erasing your memory and the like. I’d hate to lose the good memories i have because of some bad ones. good memories are good because they can be contrasted with the bad memories. of course the opposite is true as well, so you could argue that not having good memories makes the bad ones seem better. but i’ll gladly take a few bad memories if it means I can have at least as many good. so if the technology to erase someone should ever come about (whithout the help of the mafia), and i happen to think it’s a good idea, remind me never to do it, thanks.

It’s like i always say…

women better do the housework, if they know what’s good for ‘em!

The BBC news says it too.

comment spam

Monday, March 29th, 2004

I haven’t actually had any spam in comments, other than random people finding my site and posting stupid crap, but I know that Joann and Irwin have. Mike showed me this MT plugin called MT-Blacklist which is basically a comment filter.
You can set up words to block, and it also downloads a list of URLs to block, so when someone posts a comment, if it hits a match on one of those, the comment will be rejected.
If you do happen to get a bunch of spam, it has a “Search and De-Spam” feature where it will search through your comments and delete any offending spam comments, instead of you having to search through your comments and delete them one by one.

I haven’t set it up on my site, but it seems like a pretty useful tool, so i might get it up and running.

taxes are fun!

Monday, March 29th, 2004

I just filed my taxes, took about an hour, hour and a half. I’d never used it before, but tax software is mighty nice. It knows all the stuff you have to do, and all the stuff you might be able to do, but probably don’t have to. The one i picked up was TaxCut, only $15 (with a $5 rebate that i forgot to send in). Pretty painless, fast and easy. So, a couple weeks and I should be getting my refund back, yay.
If you haven’t done them yet, you only have a couple weeks left, don’t forget.

more broadband.

Friday, March 26th, 2004

read.
Bush is proposing to make broadband universally available by 2007, as well as making broadband be tax free.
That’s something i’d like to see happen. First it would allow more people access to important information they currently can not access. Plus, it would hopefully server to lower the cost of broadband, or at least increase the speed, specifically upload speed. Download speeds are usually fast enough, with cable anyway.

Air Breathing Jets
NASA is set to break the speed record they set with the SR-71 Blackbird (mach 3.2) with a jet that doesn’t carry its own oxygen for fuel combustion like regular jets do. instead it gets oxygen from the atmosphere as it flies. i’m curious what happens if this plane goes too high. It doesn’t seem like this airplane, the X-43, could fly into space, so it’s goal is probably not to be used for space travel, what with there not being any atmosphere in space. (except a dark, mysterious atmosphere.)

Hit and Run Bishop gets off easy
This kinda pisses me off. The former leader of the Roman Catholic community in Pheonix killed a pedestrian in a hit and run. He’s being sentenced to 4 years probation. His claim was the he didn’t know he hit a person, he thought he hit a dog; even though said “dog” was a 6′2″ 250 lb man. Even if you hit a dog, you still have to stop to see what happened.
This is the same man who avoided prosecution on charges of covering up sexual abuse by priests in his diocese by paying $700,000 for counselling for the victims, and creating a Youth Protection Advocate position to enforce policy on sexual misconduct.
It’s pretty sad when we need special position to make sure religious leaders don’t have sex with children. oops, i raped a choir boy, if only someone had told me that was wrong.
i think i’ll leave the subject of religion alone for now, before i piss someone off.

puzzle hunt puzzles

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2004

check out http://www.iamkevin.com/puzzles/ to see some of the puzzles. i grabbed a bunch of them, but left out the ones that had pictures that i would have also had to download, then modify the source to get the links to match up, and the ones that revolved around campus, and some other ones.
also keep in mind that there were 14 waves of hints. no puzzle had a hint in every wave, i think the most hints per puzzle were 8 or so, but that’s still a ton more hints than there were in the past, at least twice as many.

— Oops - I didn’t realize they were using CSS for the puzzles, i grabbed the css file, so the puzzles look like what they’re supposed to now.

puzzle hunt

Monday, March 22nd, 2004

so puzzle hunt ended well. we ended up in 11th place out of 51 teams. pretty good, especially considering that the top 5 is almost always the same teams.
we weren’t doing so hot around midnight, somewhere around 40, and between midnight and 5:30 or so we didn’t solve any puzzles. but then we started putting things together, and we got our second wind, and things began to work. we got up to 10th place, but in the last 20 minutes, the damned team Tiger Pit (my old team) jumped into 10th and pushed us to 11th.
