they did something right.

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

holy crap, the Washington senate did something right:
http://seattle.metblogs.com/archives/2007/03/wash_senate_app.phtml

It’s not approved yet, but we can hope.

It’s not marriage, but at least it’s a step in the right direction.

kansas is stupid.

Kansas approves Intelligent Design.
I feel bad for the actual intelligent people in Kansas. Maybe they should abandon ship and go somewhere better, seems like a lost cause to me.

14 days left.

be you angels?
nay, we are but men! ROCK!

god hates boy scouts.

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005

i don’t know what the Boy Scouts of America did, but god is pissed.

First 4 Scoutmasters died at the BSA Jamboree while setting up a tent INTO eletric lines.
The next day 300 boy scouts passed out of heat exhaustion waiting for our nation’s president, who failed to show. (don’t worry, Bush finally did make it out there, a mere 4 days later.)

A day later, a Scoutmaster and Scout were killed by a lightning strike while camping in Calfornia’s Sequoia Nat’l Park. Six others were injured.

And now anotherBoy Scout was struck and killed by lightning, this time in Utah.

that’s some bad luck right there.

tent mishap.
300 scouts go down, and no W to be found.
Bush makes the visit

sf.children–

(first, i don’t think i could possible come up with a geekier title for a post)
Matt at snarkmarket has written a few posts about the changes of living in the city vs. the suburbs (most recently here).

Here’s another article along those veins - the population of children in san francisco is the lowest among any major US city. 14.5% of the population in SF is under 18 vs. 24% in NY and 19% in Palm Beach, where everyone is old. And 40% of parents are considering leaving within the next year.
SF is doing what it can to get families to stay, since without the children, you’re not going to have much of a future.

i bet matt will write up something better than this :)

House Bill 2178…

Tuesday, March 1st, 2005

is a load of crap.
I propose Bill 2179 - hold parents accountable for raising their kids like animals who don’t know the difference between right and wrong and don’t understand responsibility and all the things that good - make that decent - parents teach their children.

I know this bill won’t pass, it’s way too broad and will immediately make games the defense of any and all crimes commited by 17 year and under kids, but it pisses me off that it even exists. talk about washing your hands of the problem.

stupid politicians.

I just wrote to my senator and representatives to tell them that this is the dumbest proposed bill ever. though not in those words.

update @ 4:55pm
earlier today I sent an email to WA district 48 Representative Ross Hunter saying that the bill was ridiculous and wouldn’t affect anything, except maybe helping criminals get off the hook by being able to blame game makers for their actions. He just sent back the following reply:

This bill is stupid unless the box has a gun built into it. I voted for
the bill that required retailers to check age on M rated games. I
understand the market power that some of the game manufacturers and
distributors have, including my old employer, and they were not using it
to force the retail chain. I’m not voting for this one.

Thanks for your comments.

I give him props, the maddest kind, for 1) realizing it’s an asinine bill, and 2) responding within 2 hours of my email, and 3) having the right idea on a more appropriate solution - although really the main problem is still parenting, but you can’t force parents to be good… or can you?

there will be no further discussion of recursive cows!

Killer Flu Recreated In Lab
Scientists have shown that tiny changes to modern flu viruses could render them as deadly as the 1918 strain which killed millions.

Am i the only one that is mildly disturbed by this?

I like this quote:

Animals exposed to this composite were dying within days of symptoms similar to those found in human victims of the 1918 pandemic.

I suppose it’s useful for research, maybe to cure the flu, but I don’t quite understand trying to create a more powerful version of an airborne illness that is spread easily, and for which we are currently low on vaccine.

In other news, Stephen King is a prophet, and Randall Flagg is coming to get you. How much are tickets to Boulder, CO nowadays?

M-O-O-N that spells Captain Trips

science is insane.

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

a man, who had part of his jaw removed due to cancer, had a replacement jaw grown on his back, and then reattached. insane. I guess it’s not that crazy that this is possible, they’ve been doing stuff like skin grafting and bone transplants, but it’s mostly the whole “we’re going to grow a jawbone on your back” thing that’s odd. kinda like that mouse with an ear growing off it’s back…

And loosely related to science, apparently British scientists say Blade Runner is the best sci-fi film EVER. 2nd place was Kubrick’s 2001.

in other news, my voice is pretty much gone today. makes it very hard to explain sql to someone… But i predict that tomorrow i’ll be ready to man the 1-900 lines with a deep sexy voice.

r.reagan jr. hates him some W.

Wednesday, June 16th, 2004

salon has a pretty good interview with ronald reagan jr. talking about the george w. bush presidency and other stuff.

The entire police force in the state of Morelos, in Mexico, has been fired by the governer. They’re being replaced by federal police until new state police are hired. Morelos is the state bordering the D.F. (mexico city and it’s surroundings) to the south.
The police in Mexico are hella corrupt; i don’t know how accurate the portrayal is in the movie Traffic, but I would bet it’s not all that far off from the truth. I don’t know that the federal police are any less corrupt, but hopefully they are. This could be the start of reducing corruption in Mexico, and maybe making it a safer place to visit.
