new watch, new book.

Friday, April 30th, 2004

so i’m going to read a book by Jack Vance, recommended by my soon to be Texan officemate.

Also, I got a free watch for test driving the Mazda 3 the other day, and it arrived in the mail yesterday. It’s basically this one except it has thin black lines for the minutes/seconds markers. It does however have the wide leather strap, which looks pretty dumb. But I didn’t like that, so I managed to extract the watch from the ridiculous looking wide strap, so now it just looks like a normal watch, and is pretty nice. The Mazda 3 is a pretty nice car too, but I think i’ll keep my car.

Speaking of which, it’s so nice out! This morning I drove to work with the t-tops off, and the windows down, and my hair streaming in the… wait, no. But it really is nice out, 75 or 80 degrees I think. LA is going to be sunny and 84 tomorrow, and 89 on Sunday. sweet. then i come back to rainy weather next week…

bunnies are no more.

I finished Watership Down last night, it was a pretty good book. For some reason I was under the impression that it was supposed to be some really important book, along the lines of Animal Farm. Maybe i’m just out of practice with my “find the theme” abilities, but I didn’t really get any deep message about society, other than military society is bad, listen to psychics, and taking risks is good and important. anyway, it was cool, basically an adventure book, except with rabbits. And I liked that they actually acted like rabbits, complete with instincts that they can’t avoid doing, and not understanding basic concepts like floating wood, and making pictures.

Now, no thanks to any of you, i don’t have another book to read. I also don’t have a GBA game to play, which is no good, since i’m flying to LA tomorrow, and i’ll be bored on the plane. I suppose I could try to sleep, but it’s just a 2 hours long flight, so not much chance to do that.

orkut map.

Thursday, April 29th, 2004

http://www.datawhorehouse.com/orkut/mapme.php
a neat website that maps your friends and friends-of-friends that you have on orkut.
here’s mine.

the interesting thing is that including all 2nd degree connections (blue lines), it’s a pretty accurate map of everywhere i’ve ever been in the US. Though it’s missing a few places (Indiana, WV, South Carolina, DC area, ohio, etc), and it includes a couple places i’ve never been.

I don’t think it’s prefect, since there are some missing red lines, and I think some red are colored blue… might have something to do with incomplete profiles, incorrect names, etc.

media players.

Wednesday, April 28th, 2004

I don’t like current media players (windows media player, itunes, whatever). Winamp is my favorite, because though it has a media library, you can turn it off, and use it as a really simple media player, which is nice. I wish media players could read my mind when it comes to organizing media.

Here’s what I want:
1. All tracks on a CD are related by Album Name and Primary Artist name. Soundtracks, collections, etc. should use Various Artists or something simliar as the Primary Artist.
This makes it possible to have….
2. Two ways of grouping - as individual tracks, and as complete albums.
3. When grouping by complete albums, you can sort by Album Title, or Primary Artist. It makes sense to do this, since a lot of people keep their CDs on the shelf in alphabetical order by artist.
4. Allow sorting by multiple fields - 1st by Artist, then by Album, or release date, or whatever
5. When grouping by artist, have subgroups for the albums on which their tracks appear.
6. When doing 5., have an option or some way of showing only their songs on each album, or the entire album - If i want to hear only the Aerosmith songs off the Armageddon soundtrack, that’s all I want to see in the list. Don’t make me pick the list of all their songs, or the entire Armageddon album, and select individually the tracks I want.
7. For multi-disc albums, group them together. (an option to do this is fine.) It’s stupid having to select Physical Graffiti Disc 1 and Physical Graffiti Disc 2 when they’re one complete album. Put the whole thing together (obviously sorted by disc, don’t put both track 1’s together) but have the option to expand the whole album into each disc individually, in case i do want to play only one disc.

I think i’ll go home, i’ll finish this later…

sumbitch!

Monday, April 26th, 2004

so the random guy i found to go to the kid rock concert might be out of town that day.
well, at least it’s his money, but i’ll try to find someone else to buy his ticket.
or i could just give it to someone and tell the guy no one wanted it… but that would be wrong.

finally.

stupid voicemail light on my phone finally went off. it had been on for months.
too bad my phone still works, or i’d replace it.

runnin’

Saturday, April 24th, 2004

Earlier this afternoon i went for a 2 mile run with Tim. We met at my building at work and ran up the road and then down this apparently historic brick paved road. I did alright, probably running 8-9 minute miles with Tim. When i got back, i was a little disappointed though, cause i was pretty much dead, and if a 2 mile run (well, maybe 2 1/2 miles said Tim) was that tough, doing the 5 mile Beat the Bridge race is going to suck.
Before i headed home, i thought i might measure the route with my car, to see just how far we actually went. Turns out it was 1.8 miles…. each way. So yeah, i think i’m doing alright if I was able to run 3.6 miles doing 8-9 minute miles. I just need to actually run more than once every…. well once, so i’ll be in decent shape. The race is a month from yesterday, so I’ve got a bit of time.

this one goes out to the ladies…

Thursday, April 22nd, 2004

Ladies, do you like the New Zealand possum, but are aware that it is destroying New Zealand’s environment?
Do your nipples get cold?

Combine these two and get yourself some possum fur nipple warmers. (Possum fur G-String also available.)

The Brushtail possum, brought from Australia to New Zealand for it’s fur, which is like Mink, is destroying New Zealand’s vegatation and thus the habitat of many birds (including kiwis! No, wait, i mean Kiwis.). It has no natural predators and numbers around 70,000,000. Poison control isn’t eco-friendly, so supporting the possum fur trade is pretty important.

So do it for New Zealand! Get a possum fur g-string and some nipple warmers.

quentin is cool.

Tuesday, April 20th, 2004

it would be pretty cool to run into quentin tarrantino and hang out with him at a mall. I like that he drives the Pussy Wagon, that’s great.

Quentin Tarrantino seems like a crazy but also pretty cool guy, though he might get on my nerves after a while because he’s insanely hyperactive. I read an interview with him and Uma Thurman (separate interviews, same story) in Rolling Stone, they both seem pretty interesting, and have a strange relationship of her being his muse and him being obsessed with her.

Anyway, Kill Bill Vol. 2 is pretty good. Just watch out for eye damage, it’s kinda gross. If you’re squeamish, close your eyes once you see it happen, until you hear the crowd make “eww, gross” type sounds. I’ll tell you what happened afterwards. Also, David Carradine is cool.

jimi.

Monday, April 19th, 2004

I just bought The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced on Saturday. It’s sad, but I didn’t own any Hendrix albums before, though I’ve begun to remedy the situation.
If anyone’s interested, i’m thinking of going down to renton to see Jimi Hendrix’s grave, mostly just to say that i’ve been there. if anyone wants to join me, let me know.

and for no reason, here’s Red House, one of my favorite jimi songs, a great electric blues song.

There’s a Red House over yonder,
that’s where my baby stays.
There’s a Red House over yonder, baby,
that’s where my baby stays.

Well, I ain’t been home to see my baby
In ninety nine and one half days.

Wait a minute something’s wrong here,
the key won’t unlock this door.
Wait a minute, something’s wrong,
Lord have mercy this key won’t unlock the door.

Something’s going on here.
I got a bad, bad feeling
that my baby don’t live her no more.

that’s alright, i still got my guitar,
look out now.

Well, I might as well go on over yonder
way back up on the hill.
Lord, I might as well go back over yonder
way back yonder ‘cross the hill.

‘cos if my baby don’t love me no more
I know her sister will.
