postsecret

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

postsecret is an online collection of confessions, submitted to an address via regular mail, written on a postcard and displayed anonymously online. it has been mentioned on NPR, The Times (UK), USA Today, Yahoo, and I saw it in the NYTimes.
Some of the secrets are sad, some are happy, some are creepy, but they are all seem honest and they all seem real. maybe i’m just overly sentimental, but reading through a lot of these made me feel for the people who sent in their secrets. everyone’s got their secrets, it’s good that there’s a place to let them out when you can’t turn to anything else.

tell me the thing no one would understand

the internet needs grammar.

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

Stanley Fish (who has a cool name) writes about many students’ inablity to write a coherent sentence even after they’ve graduated from college. (article in the NYTimes, click here for a bugmenot registration)
Instead of teaching students how sentences work and how words come together to form thoughts, teachers are giving them lessons on content, which in his opionion is useless without the means of forming said content into a clear thought that makes sense and is readable.
Fish teaches his students enough grammer that by the end of the semester they are able to create their own language, and do so as part of a semester long project.
I can’t imagine not knowing what “tense”, “manner” and “mood” are in terms of grammar. (Well, in truth I had forgotten the definition of mood and manner, but I still understand their concepts, similar to how I know grammar in Spanish but not the names of the parts. I couldn’t tell you what the past perfect whatever the crap form of a verb is.)
On the one hand I find it hard to believe that kids who are graduating from high school, and in turn from college 4 years later, don’t know these basic concepts of grammar. And yet, it explains a lot of why there are so many people with awful grammar around, especially on the internet, which brings out and gives voice to some of the dumbest people around.

i might be a little young but honey i ain’t naive.

late late night kids cartoons

Monday, May 30th, 2005

why are ABC kids and Kim Possible on at 2 in the morning? I was under the impression that most children were asleep at 2 AM.

Also, what’s that weird pink animal thing the blond kid (Ron?) has with him? Apparently it’s called Rufus. what the hell.

Not a bad animation style though.

Oh man, his name is Ron Stoppable.

Why am I watching this?

i used to do a little but a little wouldn’t do it so a little got more and more.

sf.children–

(first, i don’t think i could possible come up with a geekier title for a post)
Matt at snarkmarket has written a few posts about the changes of living in the city vs. the suburbs (most recently here).

Here’s another article along those veins - the population of children in san francisco is the lowest among any major US city. 14.5% of the population in SF is under 18 vs. 24% in NY and 19% in Palm Beach, where everyone is old. And 40% of parents are considering leaving within the next year.
SF is doing what it can to get families to stay, since without the children, you’re not going to have much of a future.

i bet matt will write up something better than this :)

more pictures, finally.

Sunday, May 22nd, 2005

I finally got around to putting up some pictures I took a while ago.
First off, The Machine. A party to raise money for The Machine, a big… thing being made for Burning Man. It looks like it’ll be really cool. And of course it will be destroyed at the end.

Next, the Steve Vai concert. Sunaree and i went to see Steve Vai and all his magnificent glory. He plays guitar well. Eric Sardinas opened up for him. He’s pretty cool, blues rock on a dobro guitar. It was a really good concert, plus I let sunaree experience more wailing guitars than she ever will again.

Jamie Waikem’s bachelor party was pretty fun. We started out with paintball in the morning. Then we met up at hooter’s for dinner, headed to belltown billiards for more drinking then was necessary, then went to rick’s, a classy place. i only went inside ricks for about 10 minutes, then had to go out to take care of an overly drunk friend. good thing i drove (and i was sober).

And finally, Pow and Oscar. I took care of them last week while anna went to E3. They are really cute. seriously, i’ve never seen cuter puppies than them. (except mojo if kathy is reading). They were pretty good except for some potty training issues, which i think are because they don’t know me so well, and were probably wondering where anna went.

that’s all for now.

every day is exactly the same.

i’ll have to get someone with a PS2 to buy it so that i can try it out.
i don’t even know what the gameplay is like, but it’s purty.

i’m afraid i’m starting to fade away

11:00 news.

Sunday, May 15th, 2005

“the sun expectedly lets forth an unexpected burst of energy.”

I just heard a newscaster start off his news report with that sentence. hehe, funny.

p.s. I like being able to immediately type stupid things like that on my new laptop. or as i have named it in Robin’s honor, kevinlappy.

p.p.s. buy an xbox 360

lappy!

card reader lives.

Sunday, May 15th, 2005

woo, i found the cd that came with my card reader and got the right drivers and now it’s working again. i have no idea how but some other driver got installed instead and broke it.

hey little thing let me light your candle .

stuff at 5am

Saturday, May 14th, 2005

i hung out with christine and crew. it’s been a while since i went out, probalby not since i saw steve vai with sunaree, which doesn’t really count since that was a concert. we just hung out at chapel, had a few drinks, but man i’m tired. (which is why i’m up at 5am writing this, of course)

so xbox 360, get one.

My new laptop is pretty nice. Dell shipped it really quickly; it was supposed to ship on friday, it went out on monday and got her on wed. then I ordered memory for it from newegg.com on wed. and that got here on friday. I like it, it’s pretty nice. It’s not light as a feather, but it’s not that heavy, and i’m more concerned with the size of it than the weight. I’m a big boy, these guns can carry anything. If only I had waited for dell’s 19″ laptop though…

well, i’m off to bed.

you’re innocent when you dream

XBOX 360.

Thursday, May 12th, 2005

MTV just aired/is airing (will air in different countries) a special unveiling the Xbox 360. I watched it, and i think it did what it was supposed to do, which is make young people aware that cool people (i.e. mtv) likes Xbox 360 and to get them thinking about it. However, if you watched the MTV show but have more than a 30 second attention span, or want some actual tangible information on the Xbox 360 besides elijah wood saying it’s cool, check out this video:
OurColony.net reward video

And here are a bunch of websites with info on the Xbox 360:
