xbox unveiling.
Watch MTV at 9:30pm on Thursday, May 12th.
OR I WILL CUT YOU.
here’s why.
It’s a little unorthodox but we’re planning on showing the premier of the next xbox on MTV the Thursday before E3. I think it’s a good idea, even if it “betrays” hardcore gamers as people have been bitching about on forums. But hey, we need to spread the word to impressionable kids who have (their parents’) money to burn, and that would be the ones who watch “the MTV.”
…now i just have to get to someone’s place who has MTV so I can watch (not that i’ll be all that surprised, but i’d like to see what we’re showing).

I’m curious abt this, kevin — b/c isn’t the core market for these systems dudes 20-30 yrs old? I mean, obviously many diff. people watch MTV, but a LOT of them are 14-yr-old girls. Seriously. And I don’t think they’re going to buy the Xbox Next360++Plus2.
…or are they?

…and it’s true that kids have their parents money to burn, but 20-30-year-old dudes have THEIR OWN money to burn, and a LAWT of it. I mean, you weren’t buying 20″ platinum rims back in the heezy, were you? And look at the Meyermobile now…

Well, here’s my take on it:
Showing the Deuce on MTV isn’t going to drive AWAY the 20-30 year olds (dudes), or if it does, the amount of dudes it drives away will be smaller than the amount of 12-18 year olds (kids) that are sucked in, i mean welcomed into the loving arms of xbox.
I think what MS is trying to do is expand the market of the xbox. They obviously don’t want to lose the dude market, but they want to keep them and add the kid market; most likely the older kids like high schoolers (punks).
And yeah, lots of girls watch MTV, and they’re not typically gamers. But if we can get them into xbox, all the better. More and more girls are playing games now that games aren’t the geeky hobby they used to be. And I think MS is really working towards getting more girls to play; that’s why the color for all new xboxes is pink, and they will come packaged with a pony. Unfortunately that also upped the price on the Xbox Pony Pack to $10000, but I think it’s worth it.
Lots of guys watch MTV as well, and you’ve already got PS2’s and Xboxes showing up in music videos, so why not get a headstart on it and show that… uh… elijah woods likes xbox.
As for the parents thing, it would be interesting to have some stats on who is buying the games, whether it’s the dudes, or the parents of kids and punks. But I think you underestimate how kids get their parents parents to buy stuff. My guess is your parents didn’t spoil you and buy you whatever the hell you wanted, same as mine. But there are lots of kids who get what they want, especially if it’s something that will make raising children easier. (and teaching them to kill more effectively.)

Your last point is well-taken. Very well, I endorse this marketing move. As long as Ja Rule isn’t involved. Ja Rule touches the 360 and I’m OUT.
